This section is for all instructors teaching, or wanting to teach, the RYA Windsurfing Scheme. Details of each level of instructor training can be found below, along with details of how to convert pre-2005 qualifications to the current scheme.
The scheme was revised in 2005, with the introduction of the new coaching technique Fastfwd. As a result the intructor training programme has been updated. Therefore, those instructors wishing to revalidate old scheme Level 2 Instructor qualifications or above should contact their Regional Development Office or RYA Training for further details on how to do this.
Assistant instructor training
Start Windsurfing instructor training
Intermediate instructor training
Advanced instructor training
Senior instructor training
Again these are all the courses that can be done but we only do the ones below.
The assistant instructor (AI) award provides recognition for the 'in-house' training given to experienced windsurfers intending to qualify as RYA start windsurfing instructors.
The AI is a competent intermediate non-planing sailor, who has been trained to assist instructors in teaching windsurfing up to the standard of Youth Stage 1 and adult Start Windsurfing courses. They must work under the supervision of an RYA senior instructor (SI).
As the AI's training is limited to assisting qualified instructors and does not include first aid or powerboat handling, AI's must never be allowed to work without direct supervision.
Eligibility
Candidates must hold the RYA Windsurfing Scheme intermediate non-planing certificate and have the recommendation of their centre's Principal.
Training
Training and assessment are conducted by the Principal or chief instructor of the training centre who holds a valid RYA SI certificate. The training may be based on a 20 hour course covering RYA teaching for beginners (criteria available from RYA Training). Candidates will be assessed on their teaching ability with beginners. Successful candidates will have their logbook signed and will be awarded the AI certificate by their Principal.
Certificate validity
The AI certificate is valid only at that centre for five years.
